- A group has petitioned the U.S. government to extend tariffs against solar companies.
- The group wants tariffs to include Chines companies factories in Southeast Asia.
An American group, American Solar Manufacturers Against Chinese Circumvention, has filed petitions with the U.S. Department of Commerce requesting federal investigations into Chinese firms which they say are circumventing tariffs by manufacturing in other countries, including Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. The petition argues that Chinese companies are using this to circumvent U.S. tariffs against Chinese solar.
The group asks the federal government to extend the tariff to cover products from Chinese companies-run factories in Southeast Asia. The U.S. has recently put pressure on China’s solar industry exports as a way of cracking down on the alleged labour abuses in the Xinjiang region.
The petitions name some of China’s largest solar manufacturers, including Longi Green Energy Technology Co, Trina Solar Co, JinkoSolar Holding Co and J.A. Solar Technology Co.
