The first edition of the Global Water, Energy and Climate Change Congress (GWECCC) commenced yesterday in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The congress offers a global platform to discuss challenges, opportunities and technology for the sustainability of the water and energy value chain.
The Deputy Prime Minister, Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, opened the event themed, ‘Water Sustainability and Energy Transition: Implications on CC & the World’.
GWECCC, which aims to promote sustainable development, integrated management, and regional and international strategy-related programs to maintain and flourish resources, will run till September 7th at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain.
Acwa Power Chairman Mohammad Abunayyan and Mark Thomas, Group Chief Executive of nogaholding, spoke at the event’s opening session.
The event showcases advanced technologies and innovations and brings together global leaders, experts, and policymakers to exchange experiences and best practices. It is also a platform to explore opportunities to support and sustain water resources and mitigate scarcity and preservation concerns.
The conference is set to discuss several pressing topics related to enabling policies for sustainable management of water and energy in climate change, investing for water and energy sustainability, the energy trilemma on affordability, security and sustainability, emerging technologies and solutions for water and energy sustainability, and the role of community in water and energy security.
The conference includes several accompanying events, such as the Technology and Youth Forums and a Technology Exhibition with participants from several specialised companies to showcase state-of-the-art technologies and best practices.
In addition to Bahrain’s Ministry of Oil and Environment, the congress has the support of the Water Resources Council, ICONEX Global and several Local, Regional and international organisations such as Aramco, Bapco Energies, Kuwait National Petroleum Company, Petroleum Development Oman and University of Bahrain, Acwa Power, Aluminum Bahrain, Enowa. Nwom, the Labor Fund (Tamkeen), Saudi Water Partnership Company, etc., to provide a means for the GCC countries, Asia and the Middle East to exchange good practices and lessons learned from the development of water and energy resources, ensure their proper utilisation and focus on the interrelationship between water, energy and climate change.
