The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, in December 2021, released a report on the performance of the Electricity sector for the 2nd quarter of 2021. Here are some of the major highlights.
- On the sector’s operational performance, the average daily generation capacity stood at 5,472.10MW, indicating a decline of 8.1 per cent compared to 5,956.23MW recorded in the first quarter. A total of 9,187,337MWh was generated, of which 8,909,910MWh was transmitted to the grid, and 7,332,949MWh was delivered to DisCos.
- On commercial performance, collection efficiency was 68.69%, as the total revenue collected by the eleven DisCos from customers in the Q2 of 2021 stood at ₦185.29 billion out of ₦268.97 billion billed to customers. Compared to the previous quarter, there was a marginal increase of 0.34% in revenue collection.
- During the 2nd quarter of 2021, an additional 317,717 end-use customers’ meters were installed. This is a significant increase compared to the 190,244 meters installed during the 1st. However, despite this increase, metering remains a major challenge. The Commission also noted that of the 11,058,939 registered energy customers as of 30 June 2021, only 4,529,497 (40.95%) have been metered. This implies that out of every ten registered electricity customers, six are unmetered.
- Also, the report indicated that the grid experienced relative stability during the quarter as there was only a single instance of total system collapse.
- Following the need to improve customer sensitisation, the Commission approved the production of a radio enlightenment program titled “Electricity Update” and is being aired in local radio stations in each of the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to engage and enlighten electricity consumers on various issues in the sector.
