Hitachi Energy Connect Gold Mine to National Grid in Tanzania

  • Hitachi Energy’s STATCOM technology reduced Geita Gold Mine’s reliance on fossil fuels by 80%, reducing emissions by 50 kilotons annually.
  • The project strengthens Tanzania’s grid integration and advances AngloGold Ashanti’s sustainability goals.

Hitachi Energy has deployed its advanced power quality solution to connect Geita Gold Mine Limited (GGML), Tanzania’s largest gold producer, to the national electricity grid. The initiative replaces 80 per cent of the mine’s fossil-fuel generators and is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by at least 50 kilotons.

In addition, AngloGold Ashanti plc, owner of GGML, partnered with the Government of Tanzania, Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), and Hitachi Energy to deliver the project.

As part of the deployment, Hitachi Energy installed a PCS 6000 STATCOM system, a state-of-the-art power electronic converter that stabilises the mine’s grid connection. The system, integrated with MicroSCADA for real-time monitoring and control, ensures a reliable power supply even under demanding mining conditions.

Furthermore, Mohamed Hosseiny, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy in Africa, hailed the project as a milestone in sustainable mining. “We proudly support Geita Gold Mine Limited in this landmark achievement. AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to sustainability and climate resilience sets a remarkable standard in the industry. It is reassuring that our pioneering technologies are advancing a sustainable energy future for all,” he said.

Beyond technology delivery, Hitachi Energy trained contractors, supervised project execution, and developed local skills to ensure long-term operational success. The company reinforced its commitment to community upliftment and sustainable partnerships in Tanzania by fostering capacity-building.

Meanwhile, the PCS 6000 STATCOM system arrived at the mine site as a compact, containerised package, pre-assembled and tested to the highest standards. Its robust design makes it adaptable to remote and harsh industrial environments, enhancing its value for mining operations and grid applications.

Hitachi Energy emphasised that electrification solutions such as STATCOM are vital in accelerating the global energy transition by enabling secure, resilient, and sustainable power systems.

Hitachi Energy operates in over 140 countries, employs over 50,000 people, and generates $16 billion in annual revenue. The company also continues to deliver technologies that balance growing electricity demand with the urgent need for decarbonisation.
