House of Reps Launch Investigation Into National Grid Collapses

  • Nigeria’s House of Representatives has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the recurrent collapse of the national grid, recognizing the critical role of a stable electricity supply for industrial viability, residential needs, and overall economic growth.
  • Hon. Billy Osawaru’s motion, prompted by concerns over increased grid collapses, highlighted the potential economic impact, including reduced industrial output and heightened operational costs.

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has taken a decisive step to address the recurrent collapse of the national grid by initiating a thorough investigation. The resolution, prompted by a motion from Hon. Billy Osawaru during the February 28 plenary, underscores the critical importance of sustainable energy in a modern economy, with a stable electricity supply essential for industrial viability, residential power needs, and overall economic and industrial growth.

Hon. Osawaru acknowledged the Federal Government’s plan to increase power capacity to 20,000 megawatts within three years, as outlined in the Electricity Act 2023. He highlighted the significant achievement of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in maintaining the power grid without disruptions for over 400 consecutive days in 2023, showcasing progress in strengthening the nation’s power infrastructure.

Despite these positive strides, Osawaru expressed concern about the sudden increase in national grid collapses, adversely affecting the economy. He noted that the frequent disruptions had reduced industrial output, increased manufacturing expenses, and a reliance on costly alternative power sources.

This, in turn, escalated operational costs, leading to higher prices for end-users, especially in the wake of subsidy removal. Emphasizing the nation’s existing challenges, including insecurity and various criminal activities, Osawaru warned that grid collapses could embolden criminal elements.

He raised the alarm about potential compromises in security facilities during dark hours, as tracking devices reliant on power might be affected. In response to these pressing issues, the House mandated its Committee on Power to collaborate with key stakeholders in the power sector.

Their mission is to conduct a swift and thorough investigation, propose solutions, and provide a report within four weeks for further legislative action. The overarching goal is to end the recurring system collapses, stimulate economic growth, and alleviate the citizens’ hardships.
