UBM, one of Hungary’s largest agricultural groups, has built a 4-megawatt solar power plant in Nyírmeggyes, eastern Hungary. The investment totals HUF 1.8 billion (EUR 4.5 million). The plant will produce 5,880 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annually.
The solar power plant will provide 64% of the electricity for UBM Feed Zrt.’s feed mills and other facilities. This move will help the company reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. UBM began preparing for the project in April of last year.
The plant will generate enough renewable energy to power 1,300 to 1,500 households annually. It will also reduce UBM’s carbon dioxide emissions by up to 2,400 tons annually.
The HUF 1.8 billion investment is funded by 20% self-financing, 45% state support through the Factory Rescue Program, and a green loan from Eximbank and MBH Bank. UBM expects the investment to be paid back within 7 to 14 years.
Founded in 1996, UBM is a leading feed producer in Hungary. It operates six feed mills in Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. The company exports to 15 countries and earns over half of its revenue from exports.
For the financial year from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, UBM expects sales of HUF 198.66 billion (EUR 498 million). UBM Holding Plc. is the only agribusiness company listed on the Budapest Stock Exchange (BSE).
UBM Deputy CEO Balázs Janositz said the company plans to increase its feed production from 600,000 tons to 1 million tons annually. He also aims to boost feed materials trading from 1.5 million to 2 million tons. He believes that all of UBM’s energy needs will soon come from renewable sources.
