The 700kWp solar PV plant managed by Premium Poultry Farms will be developing and supplying 1GW of clean energy per annum. The project is aimed at minimizing the carbon dioxide emissions generated in the country.
This superb project has placed Nigeria on the international market scene for promoting clean energy. The power plant will be running for the next two-and-a-half decades courtesy of the power purchase contract agreed upon by Premium Poultry and Norway’s Empower New Energy company.
A Bloomberg NEF report regarding the inception of solar power into the Sub-Saharan Africa C&I market indicated that the high electricity prices, the dropping prices of solar panels, and the grid problems were forcing the utilities to sell the solar resources to business-oriented customers. This caused a proportional expansion in the market as the plants were now more affordable. Although the pandemic interrupted most of the renewable energy project, the International Energy Agency (IEA) stated that the crisis interfered with the smooth transition to clean energy.
The solar plant program began its operation in December 2020 and the poultry farm generates over six million eggs every day. With this project, they hope to generate 40 employment opportunities in the construction and initiation of activities.
The chairperson of Premium Poultry Farms, Alhaji Mahey Rasheed, expressed profound joy over the implications of their operations on the environment. He said that they are focused on sustainability to minimize the energy costs emerging from the solar PV panels technology as they prepare to become the mega solar energy poultry farm in Nigeria.
