Hydrogen-Ammonia Turbine Powers Clean Energy in China

The hydrogen-ammonia dual-fuel gas turbine has officially rolled off the production line in Inner Mongolia, China. With backing from Envision Energy, this groundbreaking innovation by Mufan Power represents a crucial step in the global clean energy transition.

The turbine runs on green hydrogen and ammonia, generating zero-carbon electricity. It marks a milestone in power generation, combining advanced engineering with renewable solutions. In addition, the technology creates a full chain: from wind and solar power to green hydrogen and ammonia, and finally to clean energy production.

According to Mufan Power’s general manager, the turbine boasts 100% independent intellectual property rights and entirely domestic components. A single unit can produce up to 70 million kWh annually. Notably, international interest is already high, with orders from Germany, the United States, and Australia.

Ammonia’s high energy density makes it an ideal carrier for renewable energy. When produced from sustainable sources, green ammonia can be transported and stored at relatively low cost. Although global projects face technical and financial hurdles, Envision is advancing solutions through its large-scale Chifeng Green Hydrogen-Ammonia Project.

Mufan Power’s breakthrough allows renewable electricity from wind and solar-rich regions to travel worldwide. Stored as green ammonia, the energy can later be converted into power where wind and solar are scarce. This achievement effectively addresses both storage and distribution challenges of clean energy.

In July, Envision completed the first phase of its Chifeng project, which is capable of producing 320,000 tonnes annually. Its partnership with Mufan Power ensured the turbine’s full integration with green hydrogen and ammonia during testing. Together, both companies are reshaping the landscape of sustainable energy supply.

The debut of the hydrogen-ammonia dual-fuel gas turbine is more than a technological triumph. It supports the creation of zero-carbon industrial parks, strengthens new power systems, and enhances flexibility. Ultimately, it opens the door to a cleaner, more resilient global energy future.
