Current Hydro signs hydropower deal with Digital Realty to supply nearly 70 megawatts of renewable power. The agreement marks a significant step in expanding clean energy use within the data centre sector.
The long-term deal involves three hydroelectric projects on the Ohio River: the New Cumberland Project in Hancock County, West Virginia, the Pike Island Project in Belmont County, Ohio, and the Robert C. Byrd Project in Mason County, West Virginia. Together, they will provide nearly 70 megawatts of dependable power, with operations expected to begin in 2029.
Digital Realty, the world’s largest carrier-neutral and cloud-neutral data centre provider, will benefit directly from these projects. In fact, the agreement supports its commitment to reduce emissions while securing renewable electricity for operations.
Jeremy King, Chief Executive of Current Hydro, described the agreement as a major milestone. He explained that by using existing dams responsibly, the projects will deliver reliable, carbon-free energy. At the same time, they will create lasting benefits for local communities in Ohio and West Virginia. Additionally, this approach avoids the disruption caused by building new dams.
Nick Stork, founder of Conifer Infrastructure Partners and board member of Current Hydro, confirmed that the projects form part of a broader portfolio. He emphasised that partnering with Digital Realty demonstrates how hydropower can provide sustainable baseload energy for increasing global data demand.
The facilities will operate with lock-and-dam infrastructure already in place. Consequently, this method reduces ecological impact while enabling a steady supply of renewable electricity. Under the agreements, the energy and associated environmental attributes will flow directly to Digital Realty.
This hydropower deal between Current Hydro and Digital Realty aims to advance clean energy and encourage future collaborations. Ultimately, the initiative shows how renewable hydropower can strengthen energy security while supporting digital growth worldwide.
