- Hyphen is set to develop a $9.4bn green hydrogen production facility in Namibia.
- Hyphen plans to produce 300,000 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030.
Hyphen Hydrogen Energy has emerged as the preferred bidder for Namibiaa’a first large-scale hydrogen production facility. Hyphen is owned by the German clean energy group Enertrag. Hyphen is set to invest over $9.4 billion over the next nine years to develop the facility. The company plans to invest $4.4 billion in the first part of the project, which will deploy 2GW of clean energy capacity via solar and wind plants in Namibia’s southwestern coast by 2026. Hyphen plans to have about 5GW of clean energy generation capacity and 3GW of electrolysis capacity by the end of the decade.
Both facilities will have the capacity to produce 300,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. HYphen also estimates that the development of the facilities will create 15,000 direct jobs during the construction phases and an additional 3,000 permanent jobs during facilities’ operation. In addition, siting the facilities by the coast will aid in easy transport of the produced hydrogen.
The Namibian Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) will also grant Hyphen a 40-year concession for the facilities.
