- IATA urges increased production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
- SAF accounted for just three per cent of global renewable fuel in 2023.
Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), calls for increased production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). SAF accounted for just three per cent of global renewable fuel production in 2023.
Despite a rise in SAF use, urgent action is needed to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050. SAF is a blend of conventional jet fuel and requires no aircraft modifications. Walsh urges governments and fuel suppliers to accelerate SAF production efforts.
Government support is crucial for adopting cost-effective policies and regulations. Walsh also emphasised the importance of sustainable fuel supply for mitigating environmental impact.
Note that the aviation sector in Nigeria faces formidable challenges primarily rooted in its dependency on imported Jet A-1 fuel. This reliance contributes significantly to escalating operational expenses, resulting in heightened airfare prices. Addressing these challenges is imperative for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of the country’s aviation industry.
