Iberdrola SA has revealed that it has commissioned Gorman, its 50MW/25 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Ireland. The system, which costs USD 29.3 million, has more than 4,000 modules packed in 16 containers that occupy an area the size of a football pitch in County Meath. Gorman is Iberdrola’s first commercial-scale BESS in Ireland.
EirGrid, the Irish transmission system operator, will use the BESS system for six years as a part of the DS3 programme, which EirGrid and peer SONI developed to ensure that the country’s power system operates securely as more non-synchronous renewables are uploaded.
Iberdrola is planning on expanding the project to 100 MW in the future, the company revealed. The company added that Iberdrola has 193 MW of battery storage capacity globally and a portfolio of projects of about 1,100 MW.
