- Iberdrola begins operating 40 GWh Tamega pumped hydro storage in Portugal.
- The Storage complex can provide power for 11 million people over 24 hours.
Iberdrola SA has officially commenced the operation of the 40GWh Tamega pumped hydro storage in Portugal. The Giga storage complex, worth about EUR1.5 billion, is located on the Tamega river in northern Portugal. The site has three reservoirs – Gouvaes, Daisies and Alto Tamega – with power stations with a combined capacity of 1,158 MW. The Gouvaes and Daivoes plants generated their first energy earlier in the year, while the Alto Tamega station will begin power production in 2024.
The Tamega hydro storage complex can store enough power to meet the consumption needs of 11 million people over a 24-hour period, according to Iberdrola. Iberdrola CEO Ignacio Gala noted that the storage complex reinforces the potential of this technology to solve Europe’s energy storage problem and strengthen energy security. “Tamega will be central to Portugal’s energy transition, and we believe the project can kickstart a renewed focus on developing this technology across Europe,” added Galan.
Iberdrola has committed to investing EUR3 billion to promote wind and solar power projects in Portugal.
