IKEDC Urges Customers to Link NIN to Meters

  • IKEDC warned that customers who failed to abide by the directive would not be able to access tokens for energy more than once.
  • The NIN linkage to meters is free of charge, while customers who have already linked their NIN are not required to repeat the process.

Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) has directed electricity customers to link their National Identity Numbers (NIN) to their prepaid meters by November 1, 2023. The DisCo said only customers who have linked their NIN to their meters on or before the said date will receive the required two sets of 20-digit energy tokens to access power in their homes.

The power company disclosed this on its X (formerly Twitter) handle. According to Ikeja Electric, the move is necessary to improve the security and efficiency of the electricity distribution system. It warned that customers who failed to abide by the directive would not be able to access tokens for energy more than once.

The DisCo stated, “Dear Esteemed Customer, Effective November 1, 2023, only customers who have linked their NIN will receive two sets of 20-digit tokens required to load energy tokens. Kindly link your NIN to your meter today by visiting https://smartkyc.ikejaelectric.com/nin_index.xhtml.”

Ikeja Electric said the process of linking the NIN to meters is free of charge, while customers who have already linked their NIN to their meters are not required to repeat the process. The landlord’s NIN is the first choice to be linked as the property owner. However, tenants can also undertake this task, but they are limited to linking only one meter with the option to unlink when vacating the property.
