Imo is in total blackout following the shutdown of electricity supply to the state by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC workers on industrial action. The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC led by Joe Ajaero, had on Wednesday declared a strike in Imo over the alleged failure of the state government to meet its obligations to some of its workers.
In a statement, the Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr Emeka Ezeh, confirmed yesterday in Enugu that the strike has resulted in a total shutdown of electricity supply to Imo State. According to him, the loss of electricity supply in the entire Imo resulted from the industrial action by the organised labour union in the state. Ezeh said the striking workers shut down the supply at Egbu Transmission Station, the main electricity distribution source for Imo State.
He added, “EEDC wishes to inform its esteemed customers in Imo State that the loss of supply currently being experienced follows the industrial action by organised labour unions in Imo State. This led to the union shutting down our supply source at Egbu Transmission Station, leaving us with no energy to distribute to our customers. As a result of this development, the whole of Imo State is without electricity supply.
“We appreciate the inconveniences this situation must have caused our customers, and we hope the issue will be resolved soon.” The EEDC spokesman, however, assured the good people of Imo that the company is on standby to restore supply once the industrial action is called off. He stressed EEDC’s commitment to improving its processes and delivering enhanced services to its esteemed customers.
