India added 5.2GW of new solar capacity between the months of April and November 2020.
- The additions were lower from those of the previous year as the sector felt the impact of the pandemic.
According to a recent report by Care Ratings, India added 7 GW of renewables capacity in the period April 2020 to November 2020. The installations are down 38 per cent year on year as 11.4 GW were installed in the same period in 2019. Of the total renewable capacity, solar additions made up 5.2 GW about 75% of the total bringing the country’s cumulative installed PV capacity to 37 GW.

According to analysis from Care Ratings, the lower capacity additions were due to the lockdown measures and subsequent supply chain disruptions which slowed the movement of inputs and led to an increase in their prices. The report also cites labour shortages, constrained finances and liquidity pressures faced by the developers, as well as the restriction on the imports of inputs, viz, for solar power as factors leading to the low numbers.
