- According to the Prime Minister, India is set to meet its Paris Agreement goal of 175GW of renewable energy well before the 20200 target date.
- The country has also set a target of 450GW from renewable energy by 2030.
- India’s effort in combating climate change also includes efforts to train renewable energy stakeholders, provide clean cooking stoves to millions of households and increase its green vegetation cover.
With India’s self ambitious target of generating 450GW of electricity via renewable energy sources by 2030, the Prime Minister is confident that the country will meet it’s Paris Pact targets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing G-20 leaders on the country’s ‘circular carbon economy approach’ said the country would meet its goal of 175GW of renewable energy well before the 2022 target date. Following this achievement, the country will be looking towards achieving 450GW by 2030.
Modi also reiterated that fighting climate change requires a collaborative approach, one that is integrated, comprehensive and holistic. He also assured that India would be adopting low carbon and climate-resilient development practices. India is encouraging a circular economy, and has set up two main initiatives; the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) to achieve this. The ISA plans to mobilise billions of dollars to train stakeholders and promote research and development in renewable energy. According to the Prime Minister, this will help reduce global carbon footprint.
India’s effort to combat climate change also includes the provision of smoke-free stoves to over 80 million households through theUjjwala scheme, plans to eliminate single-use plastics and expand forest cover.
