Scottish energy developer InterGen has won a capacity market contract for its 320MW/640MWh Gateway battery storage project on the banks of the Thames in England.
According to the company, the project was acquired in an annual capacity market auction organised by the UK government.

Under a 15-year contract, the system will deliver backup power services to the natural grid during periods of excess demand. InterGen will execute the project at roughly GBP 200 million (USD 268m). It will install the battery at DP World London Gateway in Essex, planning to begin construction in 2023. Once in operation, the facility will be able to store electricity that will be enough to supply over 300,000 homes and businesses.

The Gateway project was awarded planning consent at the end of 2020. According to the developer, the scheme has the potential to be expanded to 450MW/900MWh.
