African Energy Ministers hold a virtual meeting

The African Union Congress – International Energy Agency (AUC-IEA) held its second virtual Ministerial Forum. In attendance were ministers from most African countries including Nigeria. The adviser to the Minister of Power, Dr Nurain Hassan Ibrahim, represented the Minister, Sale Mamman.
The theme of this meeting was ‘Securing Africa’s Energy Future in the Wake of Covid-19′. The Ministers acknowledged the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on the African energy sector and agreed to the need for improved investments in the sector. By the increase in investments, the continent will be able to improve access to energy and improve sustainable economic growth.
The participants noted the challenges in financing energy projects in Africa and acknowledged the importance of ministerial cooperation in the improvement of economic growth on the continent.
The meeting was hosted by H.E. Mr Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, South Africa, Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director, International Energy Agency and H.E. Ms Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, African Union.
Other African countries in attendance include Egypt, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Morocco, Senegal and many others.
International Agencies in attendance include SE4All, ERERA, Power Africa, Rockefeller amongst others.
