Iraq has signed an agreement with UAE clean energy developer Masdar to develop a solar energy project in central and southern Iraq. The agreement will see Masdar develop projects to generate 2GW of solar energy. Iraqi oil minister Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail noted at the signing that “Iraq has a plan to replace 20 to 25 per cent of its energy produced by fossil fuels with clean energy.”
The minister highlighted that the agreement with Masdar is a vital step in developing the country’s solar sector and utilising the country’s vast solar potential.
Suha al-Najjar, head of the Iraqi National Investment Commission, added that the contract would enable the Iraqi government to meet its goals of utilising cheaper clean energy.
