- Iraq and POWERCHINA have signed a deal to build solar power plants.
- The first phase will see the deployment of 750MW.
Iraq has signed an agreement with POWERCHINA to build solar plants with a cumulative capacity of 2GW. The plants are expected to be developed in stages, with the first stage comprises the installation of 750MW of solar.
Iraq has been plagued with consistent power supply challenges as the country suffers from hours-long power cuts daily. Electricity supply issues usually worsen with increasing temperatures (of up to 50 degrees Celsius) in the summer months as many households and businesses require more energy for cooling. As a result, Iraq is banking on solar power to meet its electricity demands and reduce the reliance on underperforming thermal plants.
