Iraq Finalises Plans for Solar Revolution in Public Sector

  • Iraq finalised technical plans and issued RFPs to integrate solar power, starting with a pilot at the Government Palace.
  • The rollout will expand next year to schools, health centres, ministries, and districts, driving a nationwide shift to solar energy.

Iraq has finalised technical documents and issued a request for proposals (RFP) to integrate solar power, the National Team for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Projects at the Prime Minister’s Office announced on Thursday, August 28.

Nasir Karim Qasim, who leads the National Team, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that installing solar energy systems at load centres would deliver significant technical, economic, and environmental benefits.

He revealed that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had directed the launch of a pilot solar project at the Government Palace. “This pioneering experiment, once evaluated, will spark a revolution in deploying solar energy across government buildings,” Qasim said.

He added that the team has created special committees and developed a comprehensive database of all government institutions and ministries to integrate into future projects.

Qasim outlined next year’s plans to extend solar power to schools, health centres, and ministry headquarters through quick and smart solutions. He noted that the initiative would also introduce solar energy systems with smart meters across districts and sub-districts, creating new investment opportunities in the coming weeks.

“All technical and RFP files are complete, and our governorates will soon witness a major revolution as solar power enters the distribution sector,” Qasim said.
