Iraq’s oil independence is moving closer as the country rapidly expands its refining capacity. With production now at 1.3 million barrels per day (mbpd), Iraq is positioning itself among the leading Arab nations in petroleum refining. This progress highlights a clear strategy: reduce reliance on fuel imports and achieve stronger domestic supply security.
According to the Iraqi News Agency, Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani has set an ambitious target of reaching 1.65 mbpd in refining capacity by 2025. Once achieved, Iraq will easily meet the local demand of 1.1 mbp and secure self-sufficiency across most petroleum products. This milestone would represent a significant step towards true energy independence.
The Ministry of Oil has begun loading the country’s largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker, which holds up to 20,000 tonnes of semi-chilled gas. The vessel, stationed at Basra Gas Export Port, reflects Iraq’s determination to scale up LPG production. Officials also confirmed that surplus volumes will be exported, further boosting revenue.
Ezzat Sabir Ismail, Undersecretary for Gas Affairs, emphasised that expanding LPG output is a core part of the government’s strategy. By developing gas production, Iraq strengthens its energy mix while reducing dependence on external supplies. Moreover, this aligns with broader economic diversification efforts.
As OPEC’s second-largest producer, Iraq is pursuing large-scale plans to increase refining and crude oil production. The government’s medium-term goal is to increase crude capacity to six million barrels per day. Such expansion will fuel domestic industries and enhance Iraq’s role in global energy markets.
