The Kingdom of Morocco has signed a partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) to develop green hydrogen. The partnership aims to advance the green hydrogen economy in the Kingdom. Morocco has set its sight on becoming a global leader in the production and exportation of green hydrogen.
Irena believes that Morocco is ideal as the country is a regional leader in the clean energy transition. Irena notes that Morocco has raised its clean energy targets to 52% by 2030, higher than its Paris Agreement NDC.
Under the partnership, the Moroccan Ministry of Energy, Mines and Environment and Irena will develop studies on technological and commercial prospects, elaborate models of public-private cooperation, explore new hydrogen value chains and develop frameworks for commercialisation at the national and regional level. In addition, Irena and Morocco will work together to develop policy and regulatory frameworks for renewable energy deployment and energy efficiency applications.
Morocco is also working on partnering with European powerhouses Germany and Portugal in the development of green hydrogen.
