Irish Energy Provider Announces Price Reductions for Gas and Electricity

  • Bord Gáis Energy to Implement Significant Price Reductions, Lowering Gas and Electricity Unit Rates by 15.5% for Residential Customers, Effective November 9th.
  • Irish Energy Provider’s Price Cuts Lead the Industry as Customers Can Expect Annual Savings of Up to €631.

Starting from November 9th, new rates will be implemented for all residential customers of Bord Gáis Energy, and these rates will be applied in addition to any existing discounts enjoyed by current customers. The changes will result in notable consumer savings, with the average gas bill dropping to €1,607, representing a €274 saving. Similarly, the average electricity bill will decrease to €1,948, saving customers €357. For dual fuel customers, the annual average bill will amount to €3,555, translating to a substantial saving of €631.

Dave Kirwan, the managing director of Bord Gáis Energy, emphasised the importance of these price reductions, announcing a 15.5% reduction in gas and electricity unit rates. Notably, the standing charges for all residential customers will also be reduced by the same percentage. Kirwan acknowledged customers’ financial challenges in the energy market over the past two years and expressed the company’s commitment to passing on these savings.

Bord Gáis Energy has been actively supporting customers throughout the ongoing energy crisis despite posting an operating loss of €30 million due to absorbing higher energy costs in the first half of 2023. The company has expanded its customer care teams and established the Energy Support Fund, which has provided €5.2 million in assistance to the most vulnerable customers.

This price reduction follows similar initiatives by other energy providers like Energia, Prepay Power, and Flogas. Flogas leads the way by reducing prices by 30% and committing to passing on wholesale energy price reductions to gas and electricity customers as winter approaches. Bord Gáis Energy’s price cut among these providers is the most substantial, potentially resulting in reductions of over €1,600 in bills for some dual-fuel customers.
