Irish Govt Grants Approval in Aid for Mega Wind Project

  • Approval granted for an operations and maintenance (O&M) facility.
  • Facility to support 800 MW Wind Park Phase 2 project.

SSE Renewables, a renewable energy developer, has been granted planning consent that will enable the company to construct an operations and maintenance (O&M) facility for its 800 MW Arklow Bank Wind Park Phase 2 project in Irish waters. According to the unit of utility SSE plc, the Wicklow County Council gave the approval already.

To be located at the south dock in Arklow Harbour, the O&M facility will serve as the onshore support base used to control, operate and maintain the offshore wind park. The wind park will have a sustainable education centre, a pontoon system, a designated quayside, and berth facilities to accommodate crew transfer vessels.

Arklow Bank Wind Park Phase 2 is a continuation of the 25.2-MW Arklow Bank wind park, built in 2003/04 and owned by GE Energy. The park will stand as an expansion to the existing seven-turbine complex and be located between 6km and 13km off the County Wicklow coastline. The company plans on bringing th second plant online by 2028.

In May, SSE Renewables acquired approval to develop the onshore grid infrastructure to connect the wind farm to the national power grid. The company is also seeking a Maritime Area Consent (MAC) for the offshore project from the Irish government.
