The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), at its recent Board of Directors meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, approved a loan of €17.38 million for solar mini-grid deployment in rural communities in Togo. The Togolese government is currently implementing the CIZO Togo Rural Electrification Project (Pravost), aiming to provide off-grid energy access to rural communities. Co-founded by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the programme plans to electrify 300,000 households and increase the electricity access rate to 75% by 2025 and 100% by 2030.
In addition to the IsDB loan, the Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF) also provided €9.35 million for rural electrification. The $2.5 billion LLF was established by development partners including the IsDB, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is also a part of the Fund. The Fund managed by the IsDB believes that the funds provided to Togo will enable the electrification of 372 schools, 22,092 households and 102 health centres.
