- Island Green Power wants to build 2 solar PV plants on coal power station sites.
- While one cola plant has been shut down, the second will be closed next year.
- Both projects will have a total capacity of 1GW.
UK clean energy developer Island Green Power intends to deploy over 1GW of solar PV capacity at the site of two coal-fired power stations in the UK. The developer will add the 1GW capacity via two projects; the 600MW Cottam and 480MW West Burton PV systems located within the already closed Cottam and nearby West Burton A coal-fired stations owned by French utility EDF in the East Midlands region of England. The West Burton A coal plant is still operational but is set to be closed next year.
If Island Green Power gets approval for its plans, the company intends to begin construction of the OV plants in 2024 and connect them to the grid via the connection points of the two coal-fired plants. Both plants will be coupled with energy storage systems. Island Green has already commenced preparations for the first round of public consultations, followed by environmental surveys and further consultations with the development consent applications due to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate at the end of next year. The company has ald=ready deployed 14 solar PV projects in the Uk and Ireland.
