- Italy’s BESS capacity reaches 587MW/1,227MWh in the first three months of 2022
- ANIE claims 20,832 DER BESS units from January to March
- 95% of them are smaller than 20kWh
According to the national renewables group, ANIE Rinnovabili, battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity in Italy reached 587MW/1,227MWh in the first three months of 2022, with 977MWh distributed energy storage.
The residential and, commercial & industrial categories currently dominate the BESS market in Italy, as they do in Germany.
From January through March, ANIE claimed 20,832 DER BESS units – Elettrochimico Distribuito in Italian – were deployed, totalling 123MW/264MWh. This boosts the country’s total installed DER BESS capacity and electricity to 527MW/977MWh.
Italy has 587MW/1,227MWh of BESS, including grid operator Terna’s own BESS units of 60MW/250MWh.
According to ANIE’s newsletter, 97% of the DER BESS units, 95,869, are integrated with a solar PV system, and 97% are residential. Lithium-ion batteries account for 98.2% of all storms, with lead-based flywheel batteries and supercapacitors accounting for the balance.
According to the report, 95% of them are smaller than 20kWh, with only six of the 95,869 being larger than 500kWh.
Around half of the DER BESS market is controlled by a few wealthy northern districts, mirroring their economic position. Lombardy, which includes Milan, is the largest, accounting for roughly 22% of the market, followed by Veneto (16%), Emilia-Romagna (10%), and Piedmont (around 9%).
According to ANIE, the outstanding deployment numbers for Q1 2022, 60% higher than the full-year figure for 2021, were attributed to new incentive programmes for deploying residential and commercial storage systems alongside PV.
Ingeteam, a Spanish energy conversion equipment specialist, recently delivered a 340MWh to Terna’s grid in the north. At the same time, Fluence, a global system integrator, will provide a portion of 250MW of projects that won contracts to offer Fast Reserve service back in 2020.
