- The Ivorian government approves a solar development policy for the eastern region.
- Plans include the construction of photovoltaic solar power plants near Sérebou and Bondoukou.
The Ivorian government greenlights a development policy emphasising renewable energy for the eastern region. Officials approved the initiative at the Council of Ministers meeting on February 28, 2024.
It aims to power households and businesses in the east with photovoltaic solar energy. This underscores Ivory Coast’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and diversifying its energy sources. Fossil fuels, primarily gas, account for over 73% of electricity production.
The project secures substantial financial backing, with a loan exceeding 33 billion CFA francs (over 50 million euros) from the German development agency, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). Central to the initiative is the construction of a 25 MWp photovoltaic solar power plant near Sérebou. This marks a pivotal shift towards low-carbon energy sources.
Additionally, the Emirati company Amea Power, will spearhead a separate project. It involves establishing a 50 MWp photovoltaic solar power plant in Bondoukou. These projects aim to enhance the country’s energy mix and electricity capacity.
Ivory Coast aims to generate 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. This positions the country as a regional leader in sustainable development and clean energy innovation.
