- JA Solar wins the contract to supply modules for Egypt’s Kom Ombo solar park.
- The project is being developed by UAE-based independent power producer (IPP) Amea Power.
Abydos Solar Power Company (ASPC) has placed the order for the park’s solar panels with JA Solar, a solar power component manufacturer based in Beijing, China. JA intends to provide the modules for DeepBlue 3.0 Pro. Early in January 2023, work on the Kom Ombo solar park began. In Upper Egypt, work has already started and is anticipated to last 19 months.
The Kom Ombo solar PV facility, the largest solar plant in Egypt, was initially intended to have a capacity of 200 MWp. However, Amea Power, the only shareholder of ASPC, chose to boost that capacity to 500 MWp. ASPC has engaged the assistance of a group comprising China Energy Engineering Group, China Energy International Group, and Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction, in addition to the manufacturer of solar panels.
These Chinese firms will assist Amea Power with additional renewable energy projects in Egypt. This is particularly true of the Jabal Al-Zayt wind farm, built near the Ras Ghareb neighbourhood by its subsidiary Amunet Wind Power Company (AWPC). The wind farm will cost 550 million dollars and have a 500 MW capacity.
The Kom Ombo solar project has already been approved by a power purchase agreement (PPA) signed with the state-owned Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, similar to the Jabal Al-Zayt wind farm (EETC). The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector finance arm of the World Bank Group, the Netherlands Development Finance Corporation (FMO), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have all provided loans for the construction of the solar park.
