Janus Cleantech Launches Electric Tricycles in Nigeria

  • Janus Cleantech unveiled Ketekete and Ayoka e-trikes in Lagos to cut fuel costs and provide clean, affordable transport.
  • The IoT-enabled tricycles run on swappable lithium batteries with Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Business features, doubling as mobile power banks for households and small businesses.

Janus Cleantech, a Lagos-based clean energy company, has introduced Nigeria’s first passenger and cargo electric tricycles. These tricycles are designed to reduce fuel dependency and expand access to affordable energy.

The company unveiled the Ketekete and Ayoka models on Tuesday, September 9, in Lagos. Olushola Ogunniyi, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, said the vehicles provide safe, efficient, and cost-effective transport while doubling as mobile power solutions for households and small businesses.

Ogunniyi noted that conventional petrol-powered tricycles consume as much as 60 per cent of a driver’s daily income. He said the new e-trikes directly address this challenge by lowering operating costs and delivering long-term savings.

The vehicles operate on swappable Janus Helia 9.6kWh and 7.2kWh lithium batteries, equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities for remote monitoring. The batteries support Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Business functions, allowing riders to use the tricycles as portable power banks. “A single 9.6kWh battery can power a three-bedroom flat for an entire day, offering unprecedented energy security,” Ogunniyi explained.

Beyond transport, the e-trikes can support small-scale enterprises such as phone charging kiosks, barber salons, and agro-processing businesses, creating new economic opportunities in underserved communities.

Janus Cleantech has also developed containerised Sunbred solar hubs to complement the vehicles. These hubs will provide charging and battery-swapping services while functioning as community energy centres. Ogunniyi said each hub will supply reliable power to local businesses and create two to three jobs per station.

With the launch of Ketekete and Ayoka, Janus Cleantech seeks to advance clean mobility, strengthen energy access, and contribute to Nigeria’s broader transition toward sustainable development.
