- Both companies committed to a memorandum of understanding (MoU)
Sasol, a South African chemicals company, and Japan’s Itochu Corp have collaborated to study and develop the market and supply chain for the production of green ammonia in South Africa. Both companies committed to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) detailing the initiative’s plans and using green ammonia as bunkering fuel and power generation.
In addition, the two companies will assess the potential for Itochu’s participation in Sasol’s green ammonia export-oriented projects and the production output. Other financing options to secure funds from Japan for the studies will also be explored. Furthermore, grants for executing green ammonia projects in South Africa will also be considered.
“Sasol is excited about our collaboration with Itochu to unlock South Africa’s significant potential as a large-scale producer of green hydrogen and ammonia,” said Priscillah Mabelane, Executive Vice President of Energy Business at Sasol.
Presently, Sasol is working on several green hydrogen studies and projects in its home country. One of the projects envisages the production of green ammonia for export in the Northern Cape Province.
