JAPAN: Electricity Usage to Surge During Summer Olympics

  • Temperatures expected to reach highs during the summer event
  • FEPCJ Chairman assures of adequate supply during the Olympics

Household electricity bills are expected to rise during the upcoming Japan Summer Olympics, with an expected increase in consumption. In an estimate by the government, the electricity demand is expected to increase as the hottest months of the year, and Olympic event approaches. Temperatures are expected to reach highs during the summer event. Household energy usage is predicted to rise by more than ¥600, to ¥6,973, in July. The price increase is attributed to the rising cost of crude oil worldwide.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato had last month urged consumers to conserve electricity because ”…it will be difficult to continue lifestyles as usual in terms of things like air-conditioner usage, please try to use electricity efficiently by turning off the lights in unused rooms”, he said.

Despite concerns about the costs and availability of electricity during the summer Olympics, the Chairman of the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan (FEPCJ), Kazuhiro Ikebe, was optimistic. ”We hope that we will be able to ensure a stable supply of electricity without causing any concern, especially due to unplanned power outages and various problems”, he said.
