JERA Co., Inc. (“JERA”), a Japanese utility set to resume operations at the 600 MW Anegasaki Thermal Power Station Unit 6 (the “Unit”), which is currently under a long-term planned shutdown on February 1, 2023. The unit has been on a planned shutdown since April 2021 due to deterioration and a decrease in utilisation rate.
After talks with the government, An agreement has been reached between the Ministry of Economy, Trade, Industry’s Electricity and Gas basic policy subcommittee and JERA to lift the shutdown. As a result, the plant will begin operations with Unit 5 scheduled to resume on October 24 to supply auxiliary steam for the restart of unit 6.
Although Units 1 through 4 were decommissioned in 2021. At the end of 2021, gas represented 16% of Japan’s installed capacity with 56 GW and 37% of its power generation with 380 TWh. Japan has about 2.6 GW of gas-fired projects under construction and nearly 11 GW under development. JERA’s goal is to restore the unit from its long-term planned shutdown. It will make every effort, in cooperation with related parties, to ensure the stability of the energy supply.
