- Jigawa Governor Malam Umar Namadi signs a new law to enhance electricity regulation and supply in the state.
- The law establishes the Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission to oversee energy infrastructure and attract private investment.
On Monday, September 9, 2024, Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi signed the Jigawa State Electricity Commission Regulatory Bill into law, marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to enhance electricity regulation and ensure a stable power supply for its residents. The ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the Government House.
The Jigawa State House of Assembly passed legislation establishing the Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC). The commission’s mandate includes regulating electricity generation, transmission, distribution, system operations, and supply within the state. This move is part of the government’s broader initiative to improve electricity access and foster an environment that encourages private sector investment in the energy sector.
Governor Namadi emphasised that the law would support the development of various energy solutions, including grid, mini-grid, and off-grid systems. These systems will leverage both renewable and non-renewable energy sources to address the state’s growing energy needs. The law promotes public-private partnerships to improve energy infrastructure and service delivery across Jigawa.
In his remarks, Governor Namadi highlighted the significance of the new law in addressing the state’s energy challenges, which he described as critical to Jigawa’s sustainable development and economic growth. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to meeting the state’s energy demands, emphasising that a reliable power supply is essential for the state’s overall development. “This law is vital to sustainable development and economic growth in Jigawa State. By strengthening electricity regulation and promoting innovative energy solutions, we aim to create a more reliable and inclusive energy ecosystem for our people,” he stated.
The creation of the Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission follows an earlier initiative by the administration to tackle energy issues in the state. Earlier this year, the administration established the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, appointing Dr. Sirajo Musa as the pioneer commissioner. This ministry is tasked with overseeing the state’s energy sector and is also responsible for establishing a new regulatory body to manage electricity distribution and transmission within Jigawa.
Governor Namadi’s efforts aim to modernise the state’s power sector, ensuring it can meet the population’s demands while promoting an environment conducive to innovation and investment. With the new law, Jigawa State is poised to make significant strides toward a more reliable and sustainable energy future.
