JLR Expands Solar Energy Projects in UK, China

  • JLR has launched solar projects in the UK and China, including an 18MW farm at Gaydon and a 10MW carport planned in Merseyside.
  • The company targets one-third renewable energy by 2030 and full carbon neutrality by 2039.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has advanced its renewable energy strategy by launching an 18MW solar farm at its Gaydon headquarters in the UK this summer. Spanning 26 hectares, the installation now supplies up to 31% of the site’s electricity needs, completing the first three planned UK solar projects.

The solar farm doubles as a biodiversity hub, with JLR planting native wildflowers between the panels and restoring hedgerows with pollinator-friendly species. The initiative supports the company’s pledge to exceed mandatory biodiversity targets.

At JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, a rooftop solar array expansion will wrap up this autumn. With more than 18,000 panels, the 10.7MW system will produce about 9,512 MWh annually—enough to power 3,500 homes annually. This output will cover nearly 40% of the site’s energy needs, directly supporting the production of electric drive units and batteries for JLR’s next-generation electric vehicles.

The company’s joint venture in China, CJLR, has also expanded rooftop solar capacity by 20MW. Since May 2025, the array has generated more than half of the facility’s monthly energy consumption, cutting costs and stabilising workshop temperatures while reducing grid dependence.

In addition, JLR will install over 10MW of solar carports at its Merseyside site in 2026, set to become the UK’s largest. The project will feature covered walkways, EV charging stations, and sheltered parking for staff and visitors.

JLR has committed to sourcing at least one-third of its global energy needs from on-site or nearby renewables by 2030. Driven by efficiency measures and the transition to renewables, the company has already cut operational emissions by 23.4% compared with its FY19/20 baseline.

“By generating renewable energy at our sites, we gain greater control over our energy mix and reduce reliance on volatile energy markets,” said Andrea Debbane, JLR’s Chief Sustainability Officer.

The solar projects form part of JLR’s Reimagine strategy, which targets carbon neutrality across its supply chain, products, and operations by 2039. Electrification will play a central role, with all JLR brands offering fully electric models before 2030 and Jaguar transitioning into an all-electric marque.

UK Industry Minister Sarah Jones praised JLR’s progress, stating, “The UK is a world leader in renewables, and it’s great to see companies like JLR driving progress toward a clean energy future.”

As a subsidiary of Tata Motors Limited under Tata Sons, JLR operates across the UK, China, Slovakia, India, and Brazil, positioning itself as a leader in the global shift toward clean energy and electric mobility.
