- Jordan to supply gas to Lebanon
- Jordan will also supply electricity to Lebanon via the Syrian power grid
- Lebanon in talks with World Bank to finance the project
Jordan is set to supply electricity to Lebanon amid severe gas shortages and a failing electricity sector. On Thursday, the Jordanian Energy Minister, Hala Zawati, told Sky News Arabia that Jordan would supply natural gas from Egypt to Lebanon. In addition, the agreement with Egypt includes the supply of gas from Egypt to Jordan to generate electricity which will then be transmitted to Lebanon via the Syrian power grid.
In addition to Jordanian support, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Amir-Abdollahian, stated that Iran is willing to construct two power plants in the next 18 months to augment electricity generation in Lebanon. “We are completely ready to accomplish this project using the Islamic Republic of Iran’s technical expertise and benefiting from joint Iranian-Lebanese investment,” he said.
Zawati added that Lebanon is currently seeking the support of the World Bank in financing the project. Lebanon is currently dealing with acute gas shortages, which have crippled several sectors of its economy.
