Katsina Approves Over ₦1bn for Health, Energy, Education Projects

  • Under Governor Radda’s development agenda, Katsina state approved over ₦1 billion for health, energy, and education projects.
  • Governor Radda led virtually to ensure seamless governance while recovering, as the council advanced key service delivery initiatives.

The Katsina State Executive Council has approved over ₦1 billion for a series of health, energy, and education projects, reinforcing Governor Dikko Radda’s development agenda under the “Building Your Future” blueprint.

The decisions emerged from the council’s 10th regular meeting, chaired on Tuesday, August 5, by Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe. Governor Radda joined virtually for the second consecutive session, maintaining executive oversight despite ongoing medical care following a recent accident.

In a post-meeting briefing, key state officials outlined the major allocations. Commissioner for Health Dr. Musa Adamu announced a ₦500 million approval as counterpart funding to unlock a matching ₦500 million grant from UNICEF, enabling the state to scale up critical nutrition programmes.

“This funding ensures we strengthen nutrition systems across Katsina, especially for children and adolescent girls,” Adamu said. The new contribution builds on a previous ₦200 million already committed, bringing the state’s total stake to ₦500 million and qualifying it for a ₦1 billion intervention.

The council also approved Katsina’s participation in a malaria prevention programme with the Society for Family Health and the Global Fund. The state will cover 30% of the cost while partners will shoulder 70%. As part of this initiative, the council authorised the procurement of 400,000 insecticide-treated nets to address coverage gaps.

“We are acting decisively to cut the malaria burden and ensure healthcare reaches every household,” Adamu said. He also disclosed the approval of 30 advanced medical imaging units to modernise diagnostic capacity and position Katsina as a hub for medical diagnostics in Northern Nigeria.

Information Commissioner Dr. Bala Salisu Zango revealed the council’s approval of a one-megawatt generator in the energy sector, forming part of a broader strategy to enhance energy reliability across the state.

“Reliable power is foundational to our ambitions in agriculture, healthcare, and manufacturing,” Zango said, adding that plans are underway to develop a hydroelectric power system to support irrigation and agricultural activities. Excess power from the facility will feed into the national grid via KEDCO to benefit nearby communities.

On education, Special Adviser Nura Saleh confirmed the approval of ₦588 million for the procurement and distribution of 156,566 textbooks to 578 public junior and senior secondary schools.

“This investment reflects the administration’s commitment to improving learning outcomes and ensuring equitable access to educational materials,” Saleh said.

The approvals mark a significant push by the Radda administration to accelerate infrastructure delivery and public service reforms, even as the governor continues to steer state affairs virtually from medical recovery.
