President Ruto and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday struck a deal on the construction of the Menengai Geothermal Power Plant in Nakuru County. This will pave the way for the commencement of the second green energy infrastructure project under the Sh500 billion deal reached by the two countries.
The project aims to help combat climate change, create job opportunities and provide clean and affordable power for Kenyans. The deal means Kenya and the UK have again delivered on their commitments at the Climate Change Conference held in Egypt in November 2022. The project led by Globeleq, a UK company backed by British International Investment, will generate 35MW of electricity.
UK High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriott said the plant would advance Kenya’s climate change and bring down the cost of power. On the other hand, it will provide approximately 750,000 Kenyans with affordable clean energy. During construction, the power plant is expected to create about 200 job opportunities for Kenyan workers and 35 to 40 permanent staff upon operation.
