Kenya: Electricity Demand Reaches Record High

  • KenGen records the highest energy demand ever.
  • Electricity demand has climbed steadily as the country reopened its economy following the Covid-19 pandemic.

State utility company KenGen has stated that electricity demand in the East African country rose to over 2,036 MW. The growth was attributed to the reopening of the economy as the country looked to recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.  The electricity generating company noted that the amount represented the highest ever peak demand recorded in the country’s history. Peak demand has climbed steadily since last year, rising from 1,976MW in December 2020 to 1,980MW in March 2021 and now 2,036MW.

KenGen noted that the majority of the power generated was from clean sources. The company’s installed hydro capacity is currently 826MW and MD, Rebecca Maino noted that KenGen is accelerating the deployment of clean sources including hydro, geothermal, wind and solar to meet the increasing demand. KenGen’s Gitaru, Kindaruma, Kamburu, and Kiambere power stations exceeded their projected generation output this year.
