Kenya Electricity Transmission has launched a major public-private partnership (PPP) with India’s Adani Group and Africa50, an infrastructure investment platform affiliated with the African Development Bank, in a deal worth $1.3 billion. This collaboration aims to significantly enhance Kenya’s power transmission infrastructure, marking a pivotal moment in its efforts to modernise its energy sector.
The agreement, confirmed by David Ndii, President William Ruto’s chief economic adviser, involves a concession for constructing and upgrading power transmission lines across Kenya. This initiative is expected to revolutionise the nation’s power distribution network, improving efficiency and reliability for consumers and businesses.
Adani Power and Adani Green Energy have secured a substantial contract to provide 6.6 gigawatts (GW) of power to Maharashtra in India, extending up to 2047 in parallel developments in the energy sector. This contract, reported by Reuters, represents a significant expansion for Adani’s energy operations in the region.
Adani Green Energy is poised to play a vital role in this venture. It plans to supply 5GW of solar power from its extensive renewable energy park in Khavda, located in Gujarat’s Kutch district. This initiative builds upon Adani Green Energy’s existing contributions, including a wind-solar plant in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, which has been delivering green energy to Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, since March 2023.
Additionally, Adani Power will contribute 1.6GW of thermal power from a new plant, complementing the renewable energy supplied by its sister company. The Maharashtra state electricity distribution company has already issued a letter of intent to Adani Power, marking the official start of this extensive energy supply agreement. Separate formal contracts will be established with Adani Power and Adani Green Energy to delineate the terms for providing thermal and solar power, respectively.
These developments highlight the growing influence of the Adani Group in global energy markets and underline Kenya and India’s commitment to advancing their energy infrastructure. For Kenya, the partnership represents a strategic step towards modernising its power grid. At the same time, the agreements with Adani will bolster Maharashtra’s energy resources with a blend of renewable and thermal power, ensuring a more reliable and sustainable energy supply in the future.
