Kenya Experiences Power Blackout, Transport Minister Calls for Investigation

  • This power blackout marks the third nationwide blackout in three months.
  • Kenya Power said the power outage was due to a system disturbance.

A power blackout hit Kenya on Sunday evening, affecting most parts of the country. The power outage, which began around 8 p.m., affected many vital facilities, including the main airport in Nairobi, a central transport hub connecting East Africa to Asia, Europe and other parts of the world.

This makes it the third nationwide blackout in three months occurring in Kenya, prompting the transport minister, Kipchumba Murkomen, to investigate the possible acts of sabotage and coverup over the outages. The state-run utility, Kenya Power, blamed the power outage on a system disturbance and said technicians were addressing the problem.

Later on Sunday, Kenya Power issued an update saying it had restored electricity service to parts of the country, including some residential districts in the capital. However, many areas in Kenya remained without power Monday morning. During a similar blackout last month, it took engineers over 12 hours to restore power in most parts of the country.
