The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said, the Kenya Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) has made considerable progress towards its preparations for nuclear power. The IAEA had reviewed the progress of Kenya’s preparedness to meet the Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) requirements.
According to the IAEA, Kenya has
- Developed the National Nuclear Policy and the National Policy and Strategy for Safety
- Enacted a National Nuclear law and established a regulatory body for safety, security and safeguards.
- Completed an assessment of the national legal framework and identified other laws needing review.
- Enhanced the coordination among its key stakeholders in the development of its nuclear power program.
Operational Lead of the IAEA’s Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section Eric Mathet said, ”Kenya made considerable efforts to address all the recommendations and suggestions made by the INIR team in 2015. The preparatory work needed to inform the Government’s decision has progressed”.
Kenya plans to generate electricity through nuclear energy.
