- KenGen begins drilling a geothermal well in Djibouti
- KenGen has carried out similar projects in Ethiopia
The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has commenced drilling geothermal wells in Djibouti. KenGen had, in February this year, signed a Ksh700 million contract with the Djibouti Office of Geothermal Energy Development (ODDEG) to drill three geothermal wells in the country.
The Managing Director KenGen, Rebecca Miano, while speaking on the development, said, “This is a historic moment for us, and we are confident that our team on-site will deliver the project within the contracted time and on budget despite the prevailing circumstances brought about by COVID-19 and security situation in neighbouring Ethiopia.”
The Project Manager ODDEG, Abdirasak Omar Moumin, expressed confidence in the ability of KenGen to deliver on the project. “We are happy with KenGen and learning a lot from the team on the ground. They have a long history and expertise in geothermal, which makes them the best partners in implementing our geothermal dream,” Moumin said.
The Kenyan state-owned utility company. KenGen has implemented similar projects in Ethiopia, where it was contracted to drill 12 geothermal wells.
