KENYA: KenGen Commences Drilling at Ethiopian Geothermal Site

State-owned power generation company, KenGen has begun drilling the first geothermal well for Ethiopia Ethiopia Power (EEP). The company had in April announced that drilling works would commence in May. Drilling began on May 29, with the company successfully drilling the first hole section within eight hours.  Chief Executive Officer (CEO) KenGen, Rebecca Miano made this known in a statement released today.

“So far, drilling operations are running smoothly as the team moves to the next hole section. Drilling a single well takes about two months to complete. We, however, hope to shorten this period despite the prevailing circumstances brought about by Covid-19”, Miano said.

A total of eight wells will be drilled in Phase 2 of this project which World Bank finances through a loan to the Ethiopian Government,
