- Kenyan government begins implementation of electricity tariff reductions
- To implement the first 15% tranche retroactively
- To implement the second tranche in the first quarter of 2022
The Kenyan government has announced the implementation of the first tranche of electricity tariff reductions. President Uhuru Kenyatta promised a 30% reduction in electricity tariffs last year following recommendations by a Presidential Task Force. The reductions are to be implemented in two tranches of 15% each.
The Ministry of Energy, in a statement, announced it would retroactively implement the first tranche for bills covering the end of 2021, while the second tranche would be implemented in the first quarter of 2022.
”The tariff reduction is a fulfilment of a commitment made by President Uhuru Kenyatta to the nation, that the first tranche of reduction, 15 per cent, will be reflected in the bills covering the end of the year in 2021,” the statement read.
The reduction will see electricity tariffs reduced from an average of KSh24/kWh to KSh16/kWh. Electricity consumers, last week experienced a 2% increase in electricity tariffs despite government assurances of a tariff reduction.
