Kenya Power planned to lay off staff
- Layoffs were in line with cost reduction
- Staff threatened a strike action
Kenya Power has made a U-turn on its move to lay off staff. In an internal memo to staff cited by Business Daily, the Managing Director, Bernard Ngugi, said, “In a bid to turn around and transform the financial performance of the company; improve efficiency and enhance customer experience, KPLC….[is eyeing] phased reduction in workforce to ensure KPLC remains competitive and provides the right levels of service”.
The Kenya Electrical Trades and Allied Workers Union (KETAWU) threatened to embark on a strike action if Kenya Power did not set aside the layoff plans. “We were even ready to go on strike today if they were not going to hear our plea”, Ernest Nadome Secretary-General KETAWU said.
Making a U-turn on the Mr. Ngugi said, “I would like to assure you that the company has no plans to lay off any staff member”.”The company will therefore make the requisite changes on the tender document to reflect this position”, he added.
