KENYA: Kenyatta Announces 15% Electricity Tariff Reduction for December Bills

  • President Kenyatta announces 15% electricity tariff reduction

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration announced the implementation of a 15% reduction in electricity tariffs beginning this December following renegotiations of existing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

”In response to the concerns over the high cost of electricity raised by both individual consumers and enterprises, I am pleased to announce to the nation that the reduction of the cost of electricity will be implemented in two tranches of 15 per cent each,” Kenyatta said.

”The other 15 per cent will be reduced in the first quarter of 2022. I urge the power producers to demonstrate goodwill as we seek to make our energy sector a greater catalyst of our national development,” Kenyatta added.

The Kenyatta administration began renegotiating existing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) as the state-owned utility, Kenya Power, suffers its worst financial crisis in years.
