Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) installed seven new substations in Nairobi and the Coast regions. KPLC said the seven commissioned substations will ensure customers access to reliable and sustainable electricity supply.

Residents of Nairobi and the coastal region could get unlimited power supply in the coming months following the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) ‘s move to set up new substations in the two regions.

“We have commissioned seven new substations, which will enhance the distribution network capacity by 260MVA (megavolt-amperes) to improve reliability and ensure the long-term sustainability of the grid,” said KPLC.

The substations in the Nairobi region contain 66/11kV (kilovolt) and are located in Umoja, City Centre, Highridge, Kisaju, and Kenyatta University.

In the coast region, the substations are located in Sabaki and Wundayi and contain 33/11kV power capacity.

The electricity distributor said it is working towards improving its infrastructure to meet rising demand in tandem with the country’s economic growth.

The EPRA Biannual Energy and Petroleum Statistics Report for the financial year 2023-2024 revealed that Nairobi, the coast and the Rift Valley have the highest electricity consumption in Kenya.

The report explained that the regions consumed 2,293.95 GWh of electricity between June and December 2023, representing 44.07 per cent of the country’s total electricity consumption. The move was also intended to solve frequent power outages in the country.
